| How to Write a Cover Letter |
|
| |
A
cover letter allows you to personalize your resume when send to prospective
employers in response to advertisements or to inquire about possible
interviews. A good cover letter should advertise your strengths and assets in a
way that would interest employers in interviewing you.
It’s all
about selling yourself here.
State the position that you are applying in the title of the cover letter. You
may want to identify the job ad that you are responding here. You should either
bold or underline this header.
The
first paragraph should arouse the reader's interest. Read the job advertisement
carefully and try to put what you think would interest your prospective
employer most. Show that you have done some homework on the company and the job
task. You may want to include you career objective here.
The body
of the cover letter should make the employer desire to interview you by
explaining what you can do for his/her company. Put yourself in the employer's
position as you write and present facts that will both be interesting and
accurately describe your assets and qualifications.
Your
prospective employer will be interested in your ability to make and/or save
money, to effectively assume and discharge responsibility and to produce
results in a more productive way than anyone else. Do not stress your bad
points, such as lack of experience or unemployment.
The last
paragraph should request action. Ask directly for an interview. Be courteous
but use a direct approach.
A good cover letter should be concise and easy to read, so try to limit your
cover letter to only a part of a single page. Finally, check carefully for
spelling and grammatical errors. Flawless typing is a must. |

Dear Ms Joan:
As an experienced researcher who is presently pursuing a master's degree in
Research Psychology at Cornwell Polytechnic Institute, I am writing to request
information about possible employment opportunities with Caliber Technology Ptd Ltd. I am
interested in a position that will allow me to combine the talents I have
developed in statistical. However, as you can see from the attached CV, I have
extensive experience in many other related psychology fields, and I always
enjoy new challenges.
I feel that it is important for me to maintain a practical, real-world
perspective while developing my academic abilities. I am proud of the fact that
I have financed my entire education through scholarships and summer jobs
related to my field of study. This work experience has enhanced my appreciation
for the education I am pursuing. I find that I learn as much from my summer
jobs as I do from my academic studies. For example, during the summer of 1999,
while working for ABC in Hong Kong, I gained a great deal of practical
experience in the field of consumer interviews.
I welcome the opportunity to discuss with you how I might best assist CALIBER in
fulfilling its present corporate needs. I will be available for employment from
July 22, 2006. You can reach me at the above address or by phone at 9101-0000.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely yours,
Mary Lau
