With the current economic situation, more companies are turning to flexible staffing options - one of which is contract staffing. Contract staffing has been widely accepted in America and many European countries. However, in Singapore, many still have misconception of what contract staffing is all about.
Reasons for Contract Staffing
Companies hire contract staff for various reasons. Some of which are :
Headcount issue
Special Project (only requires the staff for the project period)
Uncertain of business outlook
Starting up new department / division
Company Restructuring / Reorganization
Cost savings
Taking up a Contract Job
When you take up a contract job, it does not necessarily mean that you have to pay a penalty if you do not complete the complete the contract period. In most cases, there will be a termination clause in the employment contract, just like in a permanent employment contract, to state the notice required by either party. With the current job market, employers will find it difficult to attract good candidates to take up their contract job offer if they put a heavy penalty on them for not completing the contract period. On the other hand, they are normally quite willing to give a completion bonus if the staff completes the contract period. Typically, the duration of a contract job may vary from 3 months to 1 or 2 years.
Benefits
Depending on the salary and duration of the contract, most companies offering contract jobs will offer the following benefits :
Employer CPF contribution (in accordance to CPF Act)
Workmen’s Compensation Insurance (in accordance to Workmen’s Compensation Act)
Annual Leave (in accordance to Employment Act)
Medical Leave (in accordance to Employment Act)
Medical Reimbursement (in accordance to Employment Act)
Maternity Benefit (in accordance to Employment Act)
Other additional benefits include :
Hospitalization Insurance
Dental Allowance
Completion Bonus
Currently, many companies are going through major restructuring and reorganization. As such, even if you take up a permanent job, it may not mean necessarily mean long-term employment with the company. On the other hand, a contract position may be even more secured as the cost to the employer is much lower.
Consider these before you select a contract job offer :
Is this a good company ? (you will generally be able to get more exposure in reputable multinational companies)
What is my job scope ?
Does this job give me the opportunity to develop new skills and enhance my job experience so that it will help in my next job search ?
Terms of the contract

When selecting a job, it is important to discuss and negotiate on your compensation and benefits package with your perspective employer and to ensure that you are clear about its terms and entitlement. Be it selecting a permanent or contract job, one should always ensure that the job is able to give you the opportunity to learn and develop yourself.
